Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?

No! We are a self-refer service, meaning that anyone who is interested can contact us directly - no need for a referral from a professional.

Do you offer virtual services?

Our individual counsellors offer the option of virtual sessions, however skills group is in-person only

What is the intake process?

If you are interested in our program, please send an email to info@boundarytrailsdbt.ca. We will ask you to fill out an intake form (online), and we offer a free in-person or virtual intake session (~20-30 minutes) to answer any questions and ensure this program is what you are looking for.

If it seems like the right fit, we will connect you with one of our individual therapists who will meet with you for between 2-4 orientation and commitment sessions prior to you joining the skills group.

Do I have to participate in both the individual and the group sessions?

Yes - at this time we are only offering the comprehensive program. Some places offer skills classes only, however the research and evidence lies in the comprehensive aspect of this program.

What is the structure of skills group?

Skills group is structured more like a class than group therapy. This is where you learn new skills that you will then use, with the help of your individual therapist, to reach the goals you are working towards.

Classes are held weekly (Wednesday evenings) for 2.5 hours per week, and run for 24 weeks per session. Each group has up to 8 members, a leader and a co-leader. The format includes a mindfulness practice, homework review, and new skill acquisition.

How does billing work?

We charge $100 per skills group ($700-$900 per module up front) and $110 per individual therapy session. Payment can be made by etransfer or check.

Why is DBT so expensive?

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy is a highly researched therapy that requires specialized training, and is more intensive than most other therapies (weekly individual sessions, weekly skills group, phone coaching and team consultation meetings). Because of this it is more expensive than other therapies.

When considering the pros and cons of treatment, it can be helpful to remember that dealing with unaddressed mental health issues is also very costly financially, with regards to relationships, and with regards to being able to meet your goals and achieve a life worth living.

Are your services covered by MB Health?

No, just like all private therapy we are not covered by Manitoba Health.

Does my insurance cover it and do you directly bill my insurance?

Our individual therapists are covered by various insurance agencies, however you need to check with your insurance company yourself to confirm whether they will cover the therapy sessions.

Skills group is not covered by insurance.

Is there a sliding scale?

We do not offer a sliding scale.

Are there other options for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy in Manitoba?

Yes!

Community Mental Health (1-888-310-4593) offers virtual skills group and is free of charge if the team thinks that this would be the most appropriate therapy for you, however they are not providing comprehensive DBT at this time.
